Why You Need to Search Every State
Most people only search their current state when looking for unclaimed property. This is a significant mistake. Unclaimed property stays in the state where it originated, not where you currently live.
If you've lived, worked, attended school, or held a bank account in multiple states, you need to search every one of them.
Step 1: Start with MissingMoney.com
MissingMoney.com is the most comprehensive free multi-state search tool. It's managed by NAUPA (National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators) and searches databases from most participating states simultaneously.
Limitation: Not all states participate fully, so you'll need to supplement with direct state searches.
Step 2: Search the Big Five States
These five states hold the most unclaimed property and should always be searched:
- New York ($17B+) — osc.ny.gov/unclaimed-funds
- California ($10B+) — claimit.ca.gov
- Texas ($7B+) — claimittexas.org
- Pennsylvania ($4B+) — patreasury.gov/unclaimedproperty
- Illinois ($3B+) — illinoistreasurer.gov
Step 3: Search All Name Variations
Before searching state by state, create a master list of every name variation:
- Legal name (First Middle Last)
- Maiden name
- Former married names
- Common spelling variations
- Initials-based variations
Step 4: Don't Forget Federal Sources
- PBGC (pbgc.gov) — Pension benefits from terminated plans
- U.S. Courts (ucf.uscourts.gov) — Unclaimed funds from bankruptcy
- IRS — Unclaimed tax refunds
Step 5: Search Annually
New property is added to state databases every year. Run your search annually, especially in the 3-5 years after any major life event.
