The 5 States Holding the Most Unclaimed Property

The Biggest Vaults of Unclaimed Money

Not all states are equal when it comes to unclaimed property. Some hold significantly more than others, driven by population size, business activity, and how long they've been collecting.

1. New York — $17 Billion+

New York holds the most unclaimed property of any state. The Office of the State Comptroller manages the program and allows location service providers to download the full database via FTP. The maximum finder fee is 15%.

2. California — $10 Billion+

California's State Controller's Office holds over $10 billion in unclaimed property. Notably, California makes its entire database available for free download in CSV format, updated weekly. The finder fee is capped at 10%.

3. Texas — $7 Billion+

The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts manages unclaimed property through ClaimItTexas.org. Texas has specific rules about heir finders — if you go beyond reviewing public records, you may need a private investigator license.

4. Pennsylvania — $4 Billion+

Pennsylvania Treasury requires all finders to be registered and certified. The fee cap is 15%. The state has been actively working to return unclaimed property through outreach events.

5. Illinois — $3 Billion+

Illinois is one of the most regulated states for property finders. A license is required ($500 application fee), applicants must be 21+, and background checks are mandatory. The license is valid for 3 years.

What This Means for You

If you've ever lived, worked, or done business in any of these states, the probability of having unclaimed property is higher than average. A comprehensive search across all five — plus the remaining 45 states — is the best way to ensure nothing is missed.
